Bird flu (avian influenza H5N1) 3 July2026

We are monitoring the current bird flu situation and following the latest advice from Australian authorities.

Biosecurity measures are in place to help protect the wildlife in our care, as well as our staff, volunteers, and visitors.

If you find a sick bird or multiple dead birds

  • Do not touch it.
  • Keep children and pets away.
  • Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

If you find a sick, injured, or orphaned native animal

Call ACT Wildlife 043230033 Our volunteers will advise you on what to do next.

If the bird is not part of a high-risk species group, we can provide rescue advice and arrange rescue where appropriate.

Only handle sick or dead birds if you have been told it is safe to do so.

Wildlife Friendly Netting Swap

Use netting that protects your fruit and our wildlife.

Flying-foxes, possums, birds and other wildlife get tangled in netting and can die from injuries they suffer.

How can you help protect them?
Use wildlife friendly netting or don’t use netting at all. The ACT Government banned the use of large aperture netting in April 2024.
To receive new wildlife friendly netting, for free, bring your old large mesh netting to the ACT Wildlife office 2 Dairy Road Fyshwick. Check the swap times below. We may make more times available in the future.
The free replacement netting comes in only 2 sizes:
4m x 4m sheet of netting
4mx10m sheet of netting
The swap is approximately 1 : 1. For example bring in netting from two trees, and we’ll give you two 4m x 4m nets or 1x 4m x 10m.
Only white netting is being given out, as animals are more able to see and avoid it.
Vegetable garden netting can also be swapped.
 
Who is eligible?
ACT householders with large mesh netting more than 5mm (your finger goes through the netting).
Businesses are not eligible.
Residents living outside the ACT are not eligible.
